Pioneering Jessup Family Marks 25 Years at Cathedral City Auto Center

Founded in Palm Springs in 1938, Jessup has remained a family-owned automotive business for generations. Twenty-five years ago, the Jessup family moved to its current campus in the Cathedral City Auto Center, creating a more central location designed to better serve customers across the valley with vehicle sales, service, parts, fleet and commercial vehicle support, customer care, and collision repair.

“When we moved to our Cathedral City campus in 2001, our goal was simple: better serve the entire Coachella Valley,” said Dan Jessup, General Manager and third-generation member of the Jessup family. “We wanted our neighbors and friends to have a more convenient place to get their vehicles serviced, shop for a new or pre-owned vehicle, and experience the legendary customer service Jessup has been known for since my grandfather started the dealership in Palm Springs in 1938.”

Built on nearly nine acres, the Cathedral City campus originally represented longtime historic automotive brands including Oldsmobile and Pontiac, later welcoming HUMMER and Swedish brand SAAB. Today, Jessup Auto Plaza represents Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC, along with pre-owned vehicles, service, parts, fleet, commercial sales, a Business Elite Truck Center, and an on-site Body Shop.

The campus development represented a major investment in Cathedral City and the Coachella Valley, costing just under $8 million at the time. Today, Jessup Auto Plaza provides jobs for approximately 120 people and generates approximately $150 million in total annual sales.

“Our family mantra has always been to treat everyone like a guest in our home,” Jessup added. “That belief has guided our family for generations. Whether someone is here for service, a repair, a work truck, a family SUV, or their next vehicle, we want them to feel welcomed, respected, and taken care of.”

The Jessup family’s continued growth includes Chavez-Jessup GMC in Indio, allowing the dealership group to serve even more drivers, families, and businesses across the Coachella Valley with locations in both Cathedral City and Indio.

“Moving to Cathedral City helped us serve the valley from a central location, and Chavez-Jessup GMC in Indio has allowed us to expand that commitment even further,” Jessup said. “As we look back on 25 years at our Cathedral City campus, we are grateful for our customers, our employees, and the community that has supported our family business for generations.”

As part of the milestone, Jessup will also recognize longtime customers through private customer appreciation activities, continuing a tradition of saying thank you to the guests who have helped shape the dealership’s story.
