A graduate of Duke University, where he earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees, he has practiced neurotologic surgery at leading academic institutions for over forty years. Alongside his medical career, he has faithfully led Bible studies and founded a surgical mission outreach in the Dominican Republic, serving on mission teams there and in Bolivia for more than thirty years. He and his wife, Debbie, live in Charleston, South Carolina, and have three children and three grandchildren.
