World History Encyclopedia (www.worldhistory.org), the free history reference site read in dozens of languages, today published its traffic figures for the eighteen days after release, compared with the eighteen days before:
– Odysseus — up 571%
– Trojan War — up 525%
– Iliad — up 289%
– Greek mythology and Trojan War content overall — up roughly 290%
– The entire site, across every civilisation and century — up 8.89%
That last figure is the striking one: a single film about a single Bronze Age king moved a global reference work covering all of recorded human history.
“A blockbuster gives someone a reason to type ‘Odysseus’ into a search bar,” said Jan van der Crabben, Founder and CEO of World History Encyclopedia. “What happens next depends on what they find there. They arrive looking for Odysseus and leave having read about the Epic Cycle, Poseidon, Penelope, Ithaca.”
The biggest single beneficiary was not an article but an illustration: World History Encyclopedia’s Map of Odysseus’ 10-Year Journey Home, published under a Creative Commons licence years before filming began and reproduced worldwide since release. It remains free for editorial reuse.
“It went everywhere, which is precisely the point of publishing it that way,” said van der Crabben. “A $250 million film made our map famous, and there was no paywall in the way.”
The findings offer rare quantitative evidence that popular culture drives people toward history rather than replacing it. The surge appeared across the site’s other language editions, not only in English.
“We believe information on the internet should be free, accurate, and written by humans who know the difference between Homer’s original and Nolan’s interpretation,” said van der Crabben. “Every blockbuster is a test of whether that still exists at scale. This summer, we’re glad it does.”
